He graduated in Electronic Engineering in Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA) (1979), received the master degree in Electronic Engineering from ITA (1983) and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany. He completed a postdoctoral internship at the University of Hanover, Germany, in 2015. He is currently Associate Professor in the postgraduate program of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) and Associate Professor at the State University Of Rio de Janeiro (UREJ). He is a senior member of the IEEE-Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IEEE-GRSS) and member of the Brazilian Society of Cartography, Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (SBC). He is the current vice president of Commission I of the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), president of the Brazilian chapter of IEEE-GRSS and deputy director for international affairs at SBC. He is also an Associate Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Cartography and of the Geodetic Sciences Bulletin and was guest editor of the Latin America Special Issue of Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observation and Remote Sensing (JSTARS) published in 2016 is the guest editor responsible for the special issue on Latin America of the International Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, scheduled for publication in 2018. His areas of interest include Analysis of Imaging, Remote Sensing, Pattern Recognition, Biometrics and Computer Vision. He supervised 29 master's and 8 doctoral theses. It has more than 170 publications in periodicals, book chapters and proceedings of scientific events.
